A psychological evaluation is routinely conducted prior to bariatric surgery to help assess a patient’s readiness for surgery. The evaluation involves completion of some paperwork, answering questions (about yourself and your preferences) on a computer, and a meeting with Dr. Black. The process is well-organized and Dr. Black and his secretary will do everything they can to help ensure your comfort during your appointment. If you request, Dr. Black can fax a report to your surgeon following your appointment. All forms of surgery entail risks, and patients should speak to their surgeon and primary care physician prior to the psychological evaluation to ensure familiarity with the risks associated with their surgical procedure.
Dr. Black has conducted pre-surgical evaluations for surgeons and surgical groups throughout Northern California. He has also given talks in California and Florida on psychological issues related to bariatric surgery, obesity treatment, and sustained behavior change, and has completed a Master’s Course training program in Behavioral Health through the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.
